A season in transition.

SLOW SPRING accompanied an exhibition by German artist Annette Merkenthaler exploring transformation and change in nature. The catalogue needed to support two ways of experiencing the work: as a visual journey through the images and as a more reflective reading of the accompanying texts.

The publication transforms gradually from beginning to end. A continuous background moves from winter blue through green into spring yellow, creating a progression that becomes especially visible along the spine and page edges.

Typography follows the same evolution. The Rotis family was selected for its ability to shift across sans, semi-sans, semi-serif and serif forms following the progression of changes in colour along with the changing typefaces.

Together, colour, typography and sequence turn the catalogue into an experience of seasonal transition—one that unfolds slowly, much like spring itself.

The exhibition was first presented at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery.
