A road trip through a creative life.
ROAD TRIPS + OTHER DIVERSIONS accompanied a national touring retrospective of Prairie artist David Thauberger’s work. Spanning more than forty years, the exhibition explored his enduring fascination with Saskatchewan’s vernacular architecture and cultural landmarks—from legion halls and false-front businesses to churches and modest homes—often portrayed as if they were portraits.
The catalogue was structured as a journey through Thauberger’s career and the Prairie landscape that shaped it. The cover introduced the idea through a road-sign-inspired title set against an expansive blue sky. A flocked finish echoed a process used in the artist’s printmaking, creating a tactile and approachable entry into the book.
Subtle shifts in pacing and structure guided readers from one chapter to the next. Headings drew on the character of hand-painted small-town signage, while the artworks were given the presence of portraits—sometimes appearing like postcards gathered along the way.
A DVD featuring Thauberger at work in his studio extended the experience beyond the printed page, offering a more personal view of the artist and his process.
