A book made to be discovered.

RETROUVER brought together more than a decade of sculptural and installation work by artist Laura Vickerson. Meaning “to find again” or “rediscover,” the exhibition explored visceral beauty, delicate ornament and the traces of labour embedded within handmade objects.

The catalogue drew directly from the materials and processes central to Vickerson’s practice: textiles, texture, stitching and handwork. An intricate sewing pattern derived from the artist’s work was die-cut into the cover, while each book was individually sewn on an old sewing machine and presented in a cheesecloth bag.

These tactile and concealed elements encouraged the reader to uncover the publication gradually, echoing the exhibition’s themes of discovery and return. Carefully crafted but deliberately restrained, the book complemented the work without competing with it.
