A tradition breaking apart.
Once Upon a Pond is an exhibition catalogue exploring pond hockey in Canada and the effects of climate change on the sport. Four contemporary artists were invited to examine the cultural significance of the game and what may be lost as winters become less predictable.
The book was conceived as a fragmented object. Its cover evokes chunks of broken ice, crossed with the marks of skate blades, while the publication itself is divided into separately bound sections. Each featured artist anchors one section, followed by essays, work from local artists and supporting material.
This segmented structure creates a deliberate tension between connection and separation. The sections remain part of one book, yet appear to be pulling apart—reflecting communities united by a shared tradition while the conditions that sustain it become increasingly fragile.
The physical form makes the environmental story tangible. The catalogue does not simply document the exhibition; it carries its central tension in the way it is constructed.
